Air Wave is a fictional costumed superhero identity from DC Comics, a human mantle borne by several members of the Jordan family (Lawrence 'Larry' Jordan, Helen Jordan, Harold Jordan) and later a separate individual listed as Harold Levey. The persona centers on radio- and signal-themed equipment and, in later incarnations, metahuman energy-transmutation powers used in genre superhero narratives from the Golden Age onward.

Origin

Lawrence 'Larry' Jordan debuted as Air Wave during the Golden Age (Detective Comics #60, 1942). A recent law-school graduate and intern at the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, Larry used his interests in radio and electronics to create a cowl radio system to listen to police reports and collapsible skates to travel along telephone lines; he fought wartime foes including Nazis as a member of the All-Star Squadron. Larry later retired in 1948, married Helen, and was killed by an escaped convict, Joe Parsons, when a costume malfunction combined with a shotgun wound proved fatal. Their son Harold Jordan later exhibited the metahuman ability to transmute himself into energy; Harold briefly used the name Maser after undergoing genetic modification by Doctor Moon and was trained by his cousin Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and later associated with teams including the Captains of Industry. A separate later individual bearing the Air Wave name is Harold Levey as recorded in modern continuity references.

Appearance

All three primary incarnations are associated with helmets that enable manipulation of radio signals and, in some cases, transformation into energy. The original Larry Jordan used a cowl radio system and distinctive collapsible skates that allowed traversal of telephone lines and was accompanied by an outspoken parrot named Static. Helen Jordan briefly donned the costume. Later incarnations demonstrate flight and energy-form mobility enabled by their helmets or innate metahuman ability. No single standardized costume color scheme or full visual description is specified in the provided sources.

Abilities

Air Wave combines technological gadgetry and, in later versions, metahuman powers. Larry relied on homemade radio-and-electronics equipment (a cowl radio system to monitor police broadcasts and collapsible skates for line-travel). Helen and Harold used helmets that permitted manipulation of radio signals and granted flight. Harold Jordan exhibited the ability to transmute his body into energy/radio waves; during the Infinite Crisis event he detected cries for help from affected ships and was overwhelmed, dispersing into millions of radio waves. Harold was later resurrected as a Black Lantern during Blackest Night and subsequently involved in later continuity events. Harold also experienced genetic modification (Doctor Moon) and joined teams such as the Captains of Industry; he is a cousin of Hal Jordan, linking him to wider Lantern mythos.
