Alakshmi is an inauspicious female supernatural figure in Hindu tradition, presented as the negation or shadow-counterpart of the prosperity-goddess Lakshmi. She personifies poverty, grief, jealousy and social discord and is managed in domestic ritual and festival practice.

Origin

In Purāṇic-style accounts summarized from Padma Purana–style traditions, Alakshmi emerges early in the Samudra Manthana (the churning of the cosmic ocean) as the inauspicious aspect produced before the auspicious Lakshmi. Texts and summaries report that the gods send Alakshmi to dwell among 'pernicious persons' to bring poverty and grief. Scholars also note continuities between Alakshmi's attributes and older Vedic figures of inauspiciousness such as Nirṛti, framing her as the cosmological counterpole to Lakshmi.

Appearance

Sources describe Alakshmi as a dark-complexioned, unattractive female figure: dry, shriveled body with sunken cheeks, thick lips, beady eyes; hymnic language calls her 'krṣṇa varṇā' (blackest complexion) and associates black clothes. Other traditional epithets portray her as cow-repelling, antelope-footed and bull-toothed, and some accounts state she rides a donkey.

Abilities

Alakshmi's primary function is to bring inauspiciousness: poverty, grief, jealousy, malice and the ruination of families and male lineages when she enters a household. Cosmologically she is the inauspicious principle that emerges prior to auspiciousness; in some interpretive strands (noted by commentators) she is sent to chastise the lazy or irresponsible, functioning pedagogically by provoking hardship that may lead to corrective action and the later arrival of Lakshmi. A small number of secondary sources attribute other relational claims (e.g., a marital link to a figure named Kali) but these are not widely corroborated in the supplied materials.
