Alexida

Alexida

Minor Spiritwell-documentedAncient GreekArgosGreece
Origin

Alexida is named in classical sources as a daughter of the seer-hero Amphiaraus. In Plutarch's account (as cited in modern summaries) Argive belief held that the Elasioi or Elasii—specialized averters—were descended from Alexida, making her the eponymous progenitor of that class of averters. The attestation is genealogical: Alexida's significance in the surviving record is that she legitimates the origin of the Elasioi within local mythic genealogy (Plutarch, Greek Questions / Moralia, as cited in modern reference summaries).

Appearance

No physical description, iconography, or visual attributes of Alexida are preserved in the cited sources; she is recorded only by name and genealogical relation (daughter of Amphiaraus) in the available references.

Abilities

The sources do not attribute active powers or behaviors to Alexida herself. Rather, her importance derives from descent: the Elasioi (Elasii), described as 'the averters or expellers,' were believed in Argos to be descendants of Alexida and were credited with averting or expelling epileptic fits. Thus the functioning ability associated with Alexida in the sources is indirect and genealogical—the averting of fits is ascribed to her line rather than to Alexida personally (Plutarch; modern summaries such as Pantheon and the Elasioi entry).
