Alux (aluxoʼob)

Lesserwell-documentedMayaYucatán PeninsulaBelizeGuatemala
Origin

Sources report that aluxoʼob were created by the ancient Mayan gods from mud, leaves, and divine breath; they are intentional creations placed by deities to inhabit particular natural and cultivated places, tying them into a mythic creative order rather than identifying them as disembodied dead.

Appearance

Described as small—"only about knee-high"—and resembling miniature, traditionally dressed Maya people. Tradition holds they are generally invisible but able to assume physical form when communicating with or frightening humans and when congregating.

Abilities

Aluxoʼob are place-bound beings associated with forests, caves, stones, fields, groves, and temple mounds. They are social—able to gather, drum, and produce audible phenomena attributed to their presence—and capable of communicating with humans and performing tricks similar to other sprite-like beings in regional traditions. They can be enticed or placated to move through offerings; sources emphasize management by propitiation rather than destruction. Modern popular accounts also report alleged sightings and encounters, which emphasize visibility and interaction in contemporary settings.
