Ashina Yuanqing

Ashina Yuanqing is recorded as a scion of the Ashina clan who, in 685, was installed by Wu Zetian as a puppet Turkic khagan (Xingxiwang Khagan) and made commander of the Kunling General-Protectorate, assigned to his father's tribes. His appointment exemplifies the Tang court practice of placing client rulers of Ashina lineage over Turkic tribal areas to secure frontier control.

No contemporary physical description of Ashina Yuanqing is provided in the sources. He is attested only through administrative and biographical records that identify his roles and titles; therefore no verified details of dress or personal appearance survive in the cited material.

The sources attribute to Ashina Yuanqing political and military roles rather than supernatural abilities: he served as commander of the Kunling General-Protectorate and held the title Xingxiwang Khagan as a client ruler installed by Wu Zetian. He was taken captive by the Tibetan Empire from 686 to 689, released and taken to the Tang, and then falsely accused by Lai Junchen, resulting in his execution by waist chopping in Chang'an in 692. His sons continued to be politically active—Ashina Tuizi later rebelled and aligned with the Tibetan Empire before submitting to the Second Turkic Khaganate, and Ashina Xian held the title Xingxiwang Khagan (708–717).
