Aten

Linguistically and historically the term jtn (Aten) appears from the Old Kingdom as a noun meaning "disc" used for flat, circular objects and applied to the sun (the "disc of the day"). In traditional Egyptian cosmology the solar disc was associated with earlier sun-gods such as Ra; in the late Eighteenth Dynasty Pharaoh Akhenaten formally established a state religious system (often termed Atenism) which elevated the visible solar disc to be the primary, exclusive recipient of official cult. Surviving inscriptions from the Amarna period (including the Great Hymn to the Aten) present Aten as the creator and sustainer of life but do not provide a personal genealogical myth or divine family in the way many other Egyptian deities possess. The sources also note that household worship of other gods likely continued despite state-level centralization on Aten.

In Amarna-period iconography Aten is depicted as a solar disc or orb in the sky emitting rays that terminate in human hands; some reliefs show the disc with a curved surface. Earlier depictions (for example under Amenhotep III) sometimes associate Aten iconographically with falcon-headed solar imagery similar to Ra, indicating variation across periods rather than a single fixed anthropomorphic form.

Amarna inscriptions portray Aten as creator, life-giver, and nurturing sustainer: the deity "gives life," "shines for them all," "sends rain," and "bends low, near the earth, to watch over his creation," caring for creatures from "the unborn child to the baby chick," language preserved in the Great Hymn to the Aten. Royal ideology in these texts frames the pharaoh (Akhenaten) and queen (Nefertiti, later Neferneferuaten) as mediators who receive Aten's rays and redistribute life/favor; inscriptions emphasize that the rays are especially held out to the royal family and that non-royals receive life via the royal intermediaries. Only one instance of Aten speaking directly is recorded in the surviving corpus. Night is framed negatively in Atenist texts, and the cult's rhetoric privileges daytime presence of the sun-disc.
