Atomic-Man is a fictional American comic-book superhero, the transformed scientist Dr. Adam Mann, who gained radiation-based abilities after experimenting with uranium-235 and dedicated himself to preventing the misuse of atomic power and fighting conventional criminals. He appeared in Headline Comics (Prize Comics) in the immediate post‑World War II period.

Origin

Dr. Adam Mann, a scientist experimenting with uranium-235 in the aftermath of the first atomic bomb being used in Hiroshima, was changed into a "new type of being." The transformation left him immune to most lethal radiations and other harms and granted him novel radiation-based faculties; he then adopted the identity Atomic-Man and dedicated himself to fighting those who would pervert the element that gave him power as well as ordinary criminals, mad scientists, and political enemies as portrayed in the stories.

Appearance

Sources provide limited physical description. The one documented costume/control element is that he wore a lead glove on his right hand when not using his powers to curtail the emitted radiation so as not to harm others. No consistent full-body costume, emblem, facial description, or detailed physique is documented in the supplied sources.

Abilities

After his transformation he was described as immune to most lethal radiations and also immune to electricity, flame, and bullets. He gained the ability to see radiations previously invisible to humans. His right hand emitted a large amount of Gamma radiation, which in stories allowed energy effects such as punching through brick walls and, as described in the sources, controlling the minds of other people. The lead glove functions as a control device to restrain the right-hand Gamma radiation when he is not using his powers. His motivations are presented as protective and punitive: preventing misuse of atomic power and combating criminals and ideological foes.
