Autochthe

Lesserwell-documentedancient Greek mythMycenaeArgosAthens (mythic)

Autochthe (Ancient Greek: Αὐτόχθη) is a minor mythological princess of the Perseid line, named in classical genealogies as a daughter of Perseus and Andromeda. In some traditions she is said to have married Aegeus of Athens and borne daughters but no sons, and her chief narrative role is as a dynastic connector between ruling houses (Argos/Mycenae and Athens).

Origin

Autochthe is presented in classical genealogical accounts as a daughter of the hero Perseus and Andromeda of Mycenae, placing her in the generation after Perseus within the Perseid family. Sources that record her name treat her principally as part of family lists and local dynastic lore; in some traditions she is said to have married Aegeus, king of Athens, and to have borne him daughters but no male heir. These varying accounts are preserved across summaries and mythographic compendia which use such genealogies to explain alliances and succession between Argive/Mycenaean and Athenian ruling houses.

Appearance

Surviving literary and compendial sources supply no physical or iconographic description of Autochthe. She is attested primarily in genealogical lists and narrative summaries rather than in descriptive passages; consequently ancient texts do not preserve details of her appearance, dress, or distinguishing features.

Abilities

Ancient sources do not ascribe supernatural powers or remarkable deeds to Autochthe. Her role in the tradition is genealogical and social: as a named daughter of Perseus and Andromeda she functions as a marital and dynastic link (in some accounts, as a wife of Aegeus). The emphasis in the sources is on family relations, alliance-building, and questions of succession (not on magical activity or heroic exploits).
