Sources record Azumi-no-isora as the ancestor of the Azumi people and place him in a late legend connected to the loan of the tide jewels to Empress Jingū. In those accounts he is described as a (lesser) sea deity hired as navigator to bring the emissary Takenouchi no Sukune to the Dragon King (Ryūjin); this episode is attested in foundation-myth documents associated with the Hachiman cult.
