Bernadette "Bernie" Rosenthal is a fictional human supporting character in Marvel Comics' Captain America stories, introduced in Captain America #247 (April 1980). She is portrayed as a Greenwich Village glassblower turned law student and later lawyer, who serves as a romantic partner to Steve Rogers and as a civilian ally within the series' social milieu.

Origin

Bernadette "Bernie" Rosenthal was created for Marvel Comics and first appeared in Captain America #247 (April 1980). She was developed as a civilian supporting character and romantic interest for Steve Rogers / Captain America. Her prominence in the title grew during the J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck run beginning around issue #261 (Sept. 1981) and diminished after editorial and creative changes (notably when Mark Gruenwald took over, around issue #307, July 1985). She later reappears sporadically in subsequent decades, including in storylines where she serves as legal counsel for other characters.

Appearance

Sources do not provide a single standardized physical portrait across issues; within the comics Bernie is depicted as a contemporary civilian woman (no superhero costume) reflective of her occupations and urban setting. She is presented as the proprietor of Rosenthal's Glass Menagerie in Greenwich Village while living as Steve Rogers' neighbor and later as a law student/attorney. Her Jewish identity is explicitly part of her characterization in narrative scenes (for example, reacting to a synagogue vandalism incident). Visual depictions vary by artist, consistent with mainstream comic-book illustration practices.

Abilities

Bernie Rosenthal has no superhuman powers. Her capabilities recorded in the sources are civilian skills and accomplishments: she is a skilled glassblower and proprietor of a glass shop, a wrestling fan, a successful law student (attending the University of Wisconsin–Madison and graduating summa cum laude per sources) and later a practicing lawyer who acts as counsel for characters such as Bucky Barnes. Narratively she is characterized as assertive and initiative-taking within romantic and civic contexts.
