Created for DC Comics and first appearing in Action Comics #276 (May 1961), Chuck Taine originally had no powers until, in a Silver Age account, he accidentally drank a 'super-plastic' formula he mistook for soda pop and gained the ability to inflate and bounce. He applied to the Legion of Super-Heroes and was at first rejected, but after using his newfound ability to defeat a robber armed with electric weaponry (the bouncing prevented grounding) he was admitted and took the codename Bouncing Boy. Across later reboots and continuities his status varies: post–Zero Hour portrayals present Chuck as lacking superpowers but working as the Legion's architect/engineer (building and piloting a ship named the Bouncing Boy) and later serving as a teacher/reservist or Legion Academy head, while other continuities restore his traditional inflating power and Legion membership.
In human form Chuck Taine is typically depicted as an adult male with an uncommon, non-idealized superhero physique; commentators and fan sources note he was illustrated as lacking a stereotypical heroic build even out of costume. When using his canonical Silver Age power he inflates into an elastic, spherical form — visually a giant bouncing ball — which is the character's signature powered state. Across comics and animated adaptations costume details vary by artist and era; media portrayals maintain the core visual contrast between his ordinary stocky appearance and the inflated spherical combat form.
In most traditional portrayals Bouncing Boy is a metahuman who can inflate into an elastic, spherical form that enables high-speed bouncing locomotion. While bounced he demonstrates a limited degree of invulnerability, resistance to electric shocks (storylines note electric weapons failing against him because bouncing prevented grounding), and the unusual trait of retaining velocity as he bounces rather than losing momentum like an inert rubber ball. His power has been temporarily negated on plot-driven occasions (for example losing powers when bounced in front of a matter-shrinking machine, and other narrative devices). In rebooted incarnations where he lacks metahuman abilities, Chuck functions as a skilled engineer and architect who built a spaceship called the Bouncing Boy and serves in technical and instructional roles for the Legion.
