Chondu the Mystic is a recurring Marvel Comics character: a human practitioner of the mystic arts who becomes a criminal associate of the Headmen and undergoes repeated bodily and mental transference, including monstrous transformations and brain transplants. He functions as an antagonist in stories that blend magic and mad-science.

Origin

Within Marvel continuity Chondu originated as a sideshow magician and stage mystic who turned to crime. He joined the Headmen, a quartet of criminal masterminds, and over multiple storylines his body and consciousness were repeatedly altered by both mystical acts and the Headmen's surgical/biotechnical experiments (brain transplants, grafted bodies), producing a history of decapitation, head-on-life-support episodes, body-hosting, and possession of animals.

Appearance

Chondu's appearance varies across stories: originally a sideshow/lecturing stage mystic; later depicted in chimeric 'monster' form with winged flight, tentacle-like constricting arms, and built-in razor-sharp weapons. Narrative arcs also portray him as a disembodied head sustained by life-support, as a consciousness inhabiting a fawn/deer, and as a transplanted brain in other humanoid bodies (including a Nighthawk skull and, in one arc, a She-Hulk clone body).

Abilities

Described as skilled in the mystic arts and capable of 'intermediate magic' (yoga-based lecturing, mystic techniques such as sending an escaped convict to Limbo). In monster form he displays immense physical strength, flight, tentacle-like constricting limbs, and bladed implements. Storylines emphasize his resilience and capacity for survival through nonstandard embodiment: consciousness transfer, possession of animals, and survival after decapitation via life-support. He is behaviorally a career criminal and pawn of the Headmen, and has also attempted kidnapping for brain-transplant experiments.
