Commander Kraken

Lesserwell-documentedAmerican comic-book superhero tradition (Marvel Comics)Atlantic / maritime locales (fictionalized comic settings)

Commander Kraken is a fictional Marvel Comics character: a self-styled modern-day pirate and maritime criminal antagonist who fought heroes such as Namor and Iron Man, was revealed as a member of Hydra (head of its naval division in one issue), and after his death appears among the dead as a member of Pluto's jury in an underworld storyline.

Origin

Created by Roy Thomas and Sal Buscema, Commander Kraken first appeared in Sub‑Mariner #27 (July 1970) as a self-styled modern pirate and organized criminal leader operating at sea within the Marvel shared-universe continuity. Within storylines he functions as a mortal human antagonist; in continuity he is later revealed to have been killed and to appear among the dead as a member of Pluto's jury in The Incredible Hercules.

Appearance

Initially depicted as a modern pirate with pirate attire and a peg leg. In a later mid-1970s revamp he receives plastic surgery and technological augmentations: a rocket-powered or bionic left leg enabling flight, a left hand originally fitted with an electrified hook later replaced by a bionic/functional hand, and an electro-sword capable of firing electricity. Vehicles associated with him include squid-shaped submarines called "Squid Ships" and the brigantine "The Albatross," an old-style pirate ship depicted as capable of transforming into a high-powered golden submarine.

Abilities

Commander Kraken possesses no innate superhuman powers in the supplied sources; his capabilities derive from technology, prosthetics, and naval resources. Documented equipment includes a hook on his left hand that could emit electrical shock (later replaced), a bionic left leg that allowed flight, an electro-sword that fired electricity and could reflect force/energy attacks, and command of squid-shaped submarines and a transforming brigantine. He operates as an organized criminal commander who leads armed henchmen and pirates, and in one continuity appearance was revealed as a member of Hydra and head of its naval division (Daredevil #121). He is vulnerable to conventional force, capture, and lethal attacks as shown when he was killed by the Scourge of the Underworld (Captain America #319).
