Congorilla is a DC Comics superhero identity formed when adventurer William "Congo Bill" Glenmorgan transfers his consciousness into the body of a legendary golden gorilla using a magic ring. Portrayed across mid-20th-century adventure strips and later superhero continuity, Congorilla functions as a protector of the African jungle and its gorillas and as an allied hero within broader DC teams.

Origin

William "Congo Bill" Glenmorgan, a globe-trotting adventurer who made Africa his adopted home, was given a magic ring by the witch doctor Chief Kawolo as Kawolo lay dying. Chief Kawolo told Bill that by rubbing the ring he could transfer his consciousness into the body of the legendary Golden Gorilla. After an earthquake trapped Bill in a cave, he rubbed the ring and his mind was transported into the Golden Gorilla; contemporaneously the gorilla's consciousness entered his human body in the original account. In later continuity Bill becomes trapped in the gorilla form when his human body dies; publication revivals and retcons have since adjusted specifics but retain the ring-origin as the primary origin across most accounts.

Appearance

Two linked appearances are attested: as William "Congo Bill" Glenmorgan, a mid-20th-century adventurer, soldier and spy; and as Congorilla/the Golden Gorilla, a large simian body described and depicted as a "golden gorilla." Comic issues (e.g., Action Comics #224, #228, #248, #250) show him in a physically simian, gorilla form distinguished by a golden coloration. Sources provide no further anthropological or biometric detail beyond the human identity and the golden gorilla body.

Abilities

The Golden Gorilla body is described as possessing supernatural strength, stamina, durability, agility, reflexes, and heightened senses; it exhibits self-healing abilities, a capacity to grow in size, and a form of virtual immortality as reported in comic accounts. Central to the character's mechanics is consciousness transfer via the magic ring: rubbing the ring moves Bill's consciousness into the gorilla body (with the original accounts indicating a two-way swap). Behaviorally, Congorilla uses his simian body's powers to fight crime in the jungle, protect a band of gorillas, and act alongside other superheroes when narrative events require.
