Cydonians

In classical Greek ethnographic and geographic accounts the Cydonians are the people associated with the city of Kydonia on Crete (site of present-day Chania). Ancient authors place them among the island's populations — alongside Achaeans, Dorians, Pelasgians and Eteo‑Cretans — and some treatments (as summarized from Strabo) describe the Cydonians as autochthonous natives of Crete. Archaeological remains at Kydonia extend back into the Minoan period, but the assembled sources identify the Cydonians primarily through literary and geographic association with Kydonia rather than by a single mythic founding narrative.

Classical sources do not provide individualized physical descriptions of the Cydonians; they are referenced as a human population dwelling in the region of Kydonia (for example, Homeric/Topographic references place them by the streams of Iardanus). In modern speculative or fictional materials the label 'Cydonians' is sometimes applied to imagined sapient Martians described as humanoid builders or 'Architects of Cydonia,' but that depiction is a contemporary literary reuse of the name and not part of the classical ethnographic record.

In historical/classical material the Cydonians are an ordinary human ethnic group and are not ascribed supernatural powers or special abilities. Modern fictional and fringe sources attribute advanced engineering or civilization-building capacities to imagined 'Cydonians' when repurposing the name for Martian or science-fiction settings; those attributes derive from contemporary imaginative works and conjectural narratives rather than ancient texts.
