Daode Tianzun

In Taoist cosmology Daode Tianzun is the deified personification of the Dao and its virtue (De) and is counted among the Three Pure Ones. Traditions present him as the ruler of the Taiqing (Great Pure Heaven) and as a transcendent teacher who manifests incarnations to instruct living beings; Laozi/Laǒjūn is widely regarded in these traditions as a human manifestation or incarnation of Daode Tianzun and the attributed author of the Dao De Jing. Historical and institutional developments—such as Tang dynasty imperial honorifics for Laozi and modern commemorations—illustrate how the figure functions as both a metaphysical principle embodied and an object of worship and institutional veneration.

Iconographically Daode Tianzun is depicted as a venerable, throned elder, commonly shown with pure white hair and beard among the Three Pure Ones. Museum and temple representations (including Yuan-dynasty sculptures and modern temple statuary) present him in the elder/throne motif that marks the triad; specific dress and attributes vary across periods and contexts, but the core image is an authoritative, aged heavenly lord.

Sources describe Daode Tianzun primarily as the divine embodiment of the Dao and De, a supreme teacher who manifests incarnations (notably Laozi) to instruct humanity. He occupies the office of the Taiqing Pure One and is traditionally said to rule the heaven of Taiqing and to function within celestial courtly activities (for example, advising or participating with other high celestial figures in mythic narratives). Some accounts in popular summaries ascribe administrative epithets such as 'treasurer of spirits' or 'Lord of Man' to him; these reflect later or popular characterizations of his bureaucratic role in celestial administration.
