The D'Bari are a fictional extraterrestrial, semi-humanoid, plant-like species from Marvel Comics, native to the planet D'Bari IV. Their civilization was nearly annihilated when the Phoenix Force consumed their star during the Dark Phoenix Saga; survivors and individuals appear across subsequent comic stories and adaptations.

Origin

Introduced in Avengers #4 (1964) and developed most notably in the Uncanny X-Men #135 (1980) 'Dark Phoenix Saga', the D'Bari are presented as an indigenous, sentient race from the fourth planet of the D'Bari system. In the Dark Phoenix Saga the Phoenix Force drained their star, causing D'Bari IV to be destroyed and most of the species to be killed. Several named survivors (for example Vuk) appear in later stories as refugees, vengeful survivors, or off-world individuals interacting with other cosmic actors.

Appearance

Sources describe the D'Bari as humanoid and plant-like; visual depictions in comics and animation show foliage-associated physiognomy and green skin in some adaptations. Comic accounts characterize them as 'extraterrestrial semi-humanoids' and 'humanoid plant-like' beings. Media adaptations vary: earlier comics emphasize plant-like humanoid visuals, while the 2019 Dark Phoenix film depicts the D'Bari as green-skinned shapeshifters, an adaptation choice that differs from most comic portrayals.

Abilities

Comic portrayals present the D'Bari as a long-lived, peaceful, technological, spacefaring civilization; individuals have used advanced devices (for example Vuk employed a 'petrifactor' device in storylines). The species' defining narrative 'ability' in many accounts is survival and diaspora after their planet's destruction—survivors engage in revenge, flight, and attempts to rebuild. Adaptations differ: the Dark Phoenix (2019) film depicts the D'Bari as shapeshifters, a trait not generally attributed to the race in the original comics. The Phoenix Force, an external cosmic entity, is the cause of their near-extinction rather than an intrinsic D'Bari power.
