The Dire Wraiths are a Marvel Comics extraterrestrial species, described as an evolutionary offshoot of the Skrulls. Within the comics' internal cosmology they are a sentient, shape‑shifting race with a history of exile to a home called Wraithworld, internal gendered factionalism (technology‑oriented males and magic‑oriented females), and recurring antagonism toward the Spaceknights and Earth.

Origin

Sources describe the Dire Wraiths as an evolutionary offshoot of the Skrulls. According to published summaries, female Wraiths began to study what is described as evil magic, causing a rift with their parent race and leading to their exile from the Andromeda Galaxy. The exiled group settled on a world called Wraithworld in the Dark Nebula, where their magic was fueled by a 'black sun.' Over ensuing centuries they scattered and carried out infiltration and invasion campaigns in other star systems, including incidents on Earth.

Appearance

Wraiths are shape‑shifters with multiple reported forms: an early/transitional depiction as amorphous, cloudy, vaguely human‑shaped beings; a common transitory/human‑disguise described as stocky and troll‑like with red or brown skin roughly human in size; and an asserted 'true' form described as a large reddish body with large, pupil‑less eyes, small beaks, hands resembling small pincers and tentacles, clawed feet, thick tails, and long drill‑like tongues used in attacks. Sources also note sexual dimorphism: females lay eggs and lactate.

Abilities

All Dire Wraiths can copy the appearance of other beings by shapeshifting. In many accounts they use long, drill‑like tongues to suck out victims' brains, which allows them to gain memories. The species includes a female magical faction whose sorcery is linked to Wraithworld's black sun, and a male technology‑oriented faction. They have conducted large‑scale actions such as casting a spell on Earth's sun to draw Wraithworld into the Solar System and have engaged in infiltration of human towns, institutions, and spacefaring societies. When killed (or banished to Limbo) Wraiths have been described as turning into dust; banishing Wraithworld into Limbo caused Wraiths in this galaxy to lose their powers.
