Doctor Occult (Richard Occult) is a fictional occult detective appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Presented as a long‑lived human magic practitioner and investigator, he investigates supernatural cases, wields a distinctive talisman called the Mystic Symbol of the Seven in many stories, and has served as a guide and team member in multiple DC storylines.

Origin

Created in 1935 for American comics, Doctor Occult's fictional origin as recounted in Secret Origins #17 (1987) places formative events around the turn of the 20th century: he and Rose Psychic were kidnapped by a demonic cult and were later rescued by a shadowy group of magicians called 'The Seven,' who trained them in the mystic arts. Subsequent accounts depict him opening a detective agency and operating as an occult investigator across the 20th century and into contemporary DC narratives, his sorcery largely negating bodily aging and allowing him to persist into later eras.

Appearance

Early Golden Age depictions presented him in pulp-detective attire (fedora and long coat). Some early costumed appearances showed him wearing a long cape and flying; later portrayals commonly associate him with trenchcoat imagery (the 'Trenchcoat Brigade' trope) and a middle‑aged magic-user look. In many stories he is depicted carrying or using a talisman described as a sphere or disc with a black-and-white pattern called the Mystic Symbol of the Seven.

Abilities

Comic sources ascribe to Doctor Occult capacities including astral projection, hypnosis, illusion-creation, and telekinesis. In addition, he wields the Mystic Symbol of the Seven — a sphere or disc with a black-and-white pattern — which is described in sources as granting clairvoyance, exorcism, deflection, and force-field projection. Narratively he functions as a private investigator of supernatural cases, a guide to otherworlds (notably guiding Tim Hunter in The Books of Magic), and a participant in teams and events that involve exorcism, artifact protection, and journeys into Faerie or Hell.
