Electrocutioner is a mantle used by three human characters in DC Comics who wear circuitry-lined costumes that project electricity. Presented as minor adversaries of Batman, the identity functions as a technological persona rather than a supernatural entity.

Origin

The Electrocutioner first appeared in Batman #331 (January 1981). The original Electrocutioner — identified only as Buchinsky — was created in the modern comic-book context (credited to writers including Marv Wolfman and artists including Irv Novick in source entries) as a self-appointed executioner who used an electrically charged suit to punish criminals in Gotham. Over time the mantle has been borne by at least two successors: an unnamed second Electrocutioner and Lester Buchinsky (the original's brother). The identity recurs across multiple publishing eras and storylines, later appearing in narratives such as Infinite Crisis, 52, the Rise and Fall storyline, and The New 52 reboot, and has been adapted in television, animation, films, and video games (for example, a version named Jack Buchinsky appears in the Gotham television series).

Appearance

All three Electrocutioners are depicted wearing specialized costumes lined with built-in circuitry that enable projection of electrical bolts or arcs. Comic descriptions note gauntlets and circuitry-equipped suits; the second Electrocutioner is specifically described in sources as using a red costume rigged to generate lethal electrical shocks. No consistent unmasked physical description is provided for the human identities beyond their names (the original known only as Buchinsky, an unnamed second, and Lester Buchinsky). Media adaptations introduce variant technology (for example, an electric sword-arm in some video-game portrayals and shock gloves appearing in Batman: Arkham Origins) while retaining the core motif of electrically armed costumery.

Abilities

The Electrocutioner's primary ability derives from technology: circuitry-lined suits and weaponized gauntlets or appendages that project electricity as bolts or arcs for stunning or killing targets. Beyond electrically administered attacks, bearers of the mantle are portrayed as proficient with various weapons and as engaged in behaviors ranging from self-styled vigilantism (the original Buchinsky acting as an executioner of criminals) to criminal and mercenary activity (Lester Buchinsky working for crime figures such as Blockbuster). The identity has been used to place the wearer in villain teams (Secret Society of Super Villains, Suicide Squad) and in storylines involving death and return (Operation Zeppelin allowing deceased criminals to return in one narrative).
