Entellus

Attested in Virgil's Aeneid, Book V, Entellus appears as an aged Sicilian (or Trojan-associated Sicilian) champion who takes part in the funeral games staged by Acestes in Sicily during Aeneas's wanderings. Classical tradition and later summaries present the town Entella in Sicily as having received its name from Entellus, establishing an etiological link between the hero and local toponymy (sources: Virgil's Aeneid; modern summaries referencing classical tradition).

Virgilic descriptions and later translations emphasize Entellus's advanced age combined with enduring physicality: translators render phrases such as "heavy with age, Entellus stands his ground" and refer to his "warping body," portraying him as an elderly but still powerful veteran boxer. Later artistic depictions (e.g., prints titled "Entellus killing the bull") commonly show an elderly muscular man, though such visuals are interpretative representations rather than primary-text physiognomy.

Within the Aeneid narrative Entellus is famed for his boxing skill and veteran strength: he withstands and ultimately defeats the younger, boastful boxer Dares, at times knocking him down, and—according to the Virgilic episode as summarized in translations and commentaries—performs an additional feat by killing the prize bull with a single blow before hanging up his gloves. Some sources note material culture details in the episode, such as a reference to heavy, iron-nailed gloves once belonging to Eryx that Entellus at one point prepares to use (a detail attested in some summaries/commentaries of the Aeneid).
