Epochus

Lesserwell-documentedGreek mythic traditionArcadian local myth and temple imageryArcadiaTegeaRhamnous (attested depiction)
Origin

Epochus is presented in the sources as a son of Lycurgus of Arcadia; maternal attributions vary in different genealogical accounts (Cleophyle, Eurynome, or Antinoe). He is placed among the generation of heroic-age nobles and is associated with pan‑Hellenic episodes through his participation in the Calydonian boar hunt as represented in local art (Pausanias' description of the Tegean temple painting and later genealogical summaries).

Appearance

No independent literary physical description of Epochus is preserved in the cited material. Pausanias, as reported in secondary summaries, describes a painting in the Tegean temple of Athena Alea in which Epochus is shown supporting his brother Ancaeus after Ancaeus was wounded by the Calydonian boar; this painting representation is the primary visual attestation. Epochus also appears named as one of the brothers of Oenoe on an altar at Rhamnous in one attestation.

Abilities

Epochus has no supernatural powers recorded in the provided sources. His 'abilities' are those of a mortal noble and hunter: he is counted among the participants in the Calydonian boar hunt and is depicted in art performing the human act of supporting a wounded comrade. The narrative record also notes that he later fell ill and died, and that his father Lycurgus outlived him.
