Erinyes

Greaterwell-documentedGreekRomanMediterranean
Origin

Born from the blood of Uranus when Cronus castrated him, the Erinyes (Furies in Latin) were the oldest divine forces of retribution. They existed before the Olympians and were answerable to no god. Their domain was the punishment of crimes that violated the natural order — especially patricide, matricide, and oath-breaking. When Orestes killed his mother Clytemnestra, the Erinyes drove him to madness across Greece until the first murder trial at the Areopagus in Athens.

Appearance

Three winged women with serpents for hair and in their hands, carrying torches and brass-studded scourges. Their eyes dripped blood. They wore black robes and their presence caused the guilty to experience visions and madness.

Abilities

Could drive the guilty to madness — a form of relentless psychic torment that left no peace day or night. They could pursue across any distance and could not be barred by any physical obstacle. Their curses bound the entire family line of oath-breakers.
