Fingolfin

Fingolfin is presented as a son of Finwë (High King of the Noldor) with the Quenya father-name Nolofinwë and mother-name Aracáno. During the upheavals precipitated by Fëanor and the theft of the Silmarils, Fingolfin led the greatest host of the Noldor who followed Fëanor in leaving Aman. He survived the arduous crossing of the Helcaraxë and established rule in Hithlum in Middle-earth. After Fingon's rescue of Maedhros and Maedhros's subsequent renunciation of his claim, Fingolfin became High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth and led them in long opposition to Morgoth.

Narrative sources provide limited physical detail; Fingolfin is depicted in kingly and martial terms. He rides the horse Rochallor in his final ride to Angband and bears the sword Ringil in his combat with Morgoth. After his death Thorondor the eagle carried his body to a cliff overlooking Gondolin, where his son Turgon later had a cairn built over the remains, indicating a bodily corpse recoverable for burial.

Fingolfin's chief 'powers' are exceptional leadership, endurance, and martial skill. He led the Noldor across the Helcaraxë, maintained the Siege of Angband for nearly four centuries, and won at Dagor Aglareb. In single combat with Morgoth he wounded the Dark Vala multiple times (tradition records seven wounds and that he hewed at Morgoth's foot, causing a lasting limp) before succumbing when weariness caused him to stumble. He possesses no cosmically destructive power like a Vala but is a preeminent Elven champion whose deeds have epochal consequence.
