Gamora is a fictional character created by Jim Starlin for Marvel Comics (first appearing in Strange Tales #180, June 1975). In Marvel continuity she is presented as the adopted daughter of Thanos, an elite warrior and assassin described as one of the last members of her species and who appears across numerous cosmic storylines and film adaptations.

Origin

Created by writer/artist Jim Starlin, Gamora was introduced in Strange Tales #180 (June 1975). Within Marvel continuity she is presented as the last of her species (variously named the Zen-Whoberis) following extermination attributed in different accounts to the Badoon or, in earlier/alternate continuities, the Universal Church of Truth. She was taken in and trained by Thanos, who promised to help her avenge her people. A formative event in her biography involved a violent assault in which she was left near death; Thanos avenged her assailants and restored her to health, cybernetically enhancing her to superhuman levels.

Appearance

Sources present Gamora as an adult female humanoid warrior. Comic and film portrayals depict her as green-skinned and physically athletic; the character has been portrayed in live-action by Zoe Saldaña (adult Gamora) and Ariana Greenblatt (young Gamora in film flashbacks). She is frequently identified by epithets related to her combat prowess rather than by a detailed inventory of clothing or ornamentation in the provided materials.

Abilities

Described across sources as possessing superhuman strength and agility, an accelerated healing factor, and extensive elite combat training. Canon material states she is an elite assassin/warrior able to defeat most opponents in the galaxy; after being restored by Thanos she received cybernetic enhancements that increased her physical capabilities. Narratively she operates as an avenger, assassin, protector/bodyguard, and team member (Infinity Watch; Guardians of the Galaxy) in large-scale cosmic conflicts.
