Hayyi Rabbi

Hayyi Rabbi is described in Mandaean sources as the First Life and First Cause from whom the Worlds of Light emanate. Early manifestations such as the Great Mana (an over-soul) issue from Hayyi; other divine beings (for example Yushamin as an emanation) and delegated creators (Ptahil) operate beneath Hayyi's supremacy. Hayyi is the originating, eternal principle who sends forth divine elements, messengers, and guidance that ultimately aim to restore individual souls to the Light (sources summarize this cosmology and the role of emanations).

Hayyi Rabbi is not depicted with a fixed anthropomorphic form in the cited texts; rather Hayyi is presented as the Great Light and the Great Countenance of Glory (Parṣupa Rba ḏ-ʿqara) in the Ginza Rabba and liturgical hymns. Hymnic imagery associated with the summons of souls (e.g., references to light, dove or tamarisk scenes in certain hymns) appears in ritual texts but does not constitute a stable bodily description of Hayyi; primary descriptions emphasize luminous, non-corporeal presence.

Hayyi Rabbi functions as the transcendent source of all being and the originating Light: creating the Worlds of Light, issuing forth the Great Mana (over-soul) and other emanations, and providing revelatory summons and guidance that awaken and lead souls back to the Light. Mandaean texts state that Hayyi 'formed the soul through his power, and placed it by means of angels into the human body' and that Hayyi presides as sovereign over the worlds, delegating the making of the material world to lesser creators such as Ptahil. Hayyi is thus the source of souls, salvific knowledge, and divine authority within Mandaean cosmology.
