Hundred‑Eyed Demon Lord

The Hundred‑Eyed Demon Lord appears in Chapter 73 of Journey to the West during the pilgrims' westward journey. Within the novel's cosmology he is one of the manifold spirit‑beings and 'monster' figures who obstruct or interact with the pilgrims. In the episode he shelters seven spider demonesses at Yellow Flower Temple, disguising himself as the temple's Daoist abbot and acting in revenge and protection of those spider spirits. Later scholarly commentary reads the episode as an allegory critiquing dangerous Daoist alchemical or medicinal practices in Ming‑era contexts, linking the demon's use of toxic medicines to broader cultural debates about esoteric techniques.

In human guise the being appears as a Daoist priest or abbot of Yellow Flower Temple (黄花观), a convincing disguise that shelters the spider demonesses and deceives the pilgrims. When revealed he returns to his true animal form as a giant centipede (蜈蚣精) and opens his robes to reveal a cluster of 'a hundred glowing eyes beneath his ribs.' The eyes emit a blinding golden radiance that traps and burns Sun Wukong in the episode.

He is a shape‑changing spirit able to assume the human guise of a Daoist master to deceive and shelter allies. He uses hospitality as a means of attack, serving tea laced with toxic red dates that incapacitates Tang Sanzang and some disciples. His distinctive combat power is the luminous ocular force: the many eyes beneath his ribs emit a blinding golden light that traps and burns Sun Wukong. Socially within the episode he shelters and seeks revenge for the seven spider demonesses. After being neutralized by Pilanpo's magical embroidery needle, he is spared and taken to serve as a gatekeeper at the Thousand Flower Cave.
