Jabiru

The name "jabiru" derives from the Tupi–Guaraní languages and is reported in the cited sources to mean "swollen neck," a descriptor of the bird's prominent neck pouch. In English and other modern contexts the term has been extended from the bird-name into place-names (e.g., the Australian town of Jabiru) and product or project names (e.g., Jabiru Aircraft, rocket designations, and the naming of a bacteriophage), reflecting a pattern of lexical extension rather than a mythological origin.

As a biological species the jabiru is a very large stork measuring about 120–140 cm in length with a wingspan of approximately 2.3–2.8 m and a weight range of roughly 4.3–9 kg. The plumage is mostly white; the head and upper neck are featherless and black, and there is a distinct featherless red stretchable patch at the base of the neck. The beak is large, black, broad, and slightly upturned, measuring about 25–35 cm. Sexual dimorphism is notable, with males about 25% larger than females.

Described in natural-history terms, the jabiru forages in groups or alone near rivers, ponds, and wetlands, feeding on frogs, fish, snakes, snails, insects, other invertebrates and occasionally carrion. It feeds by tactile foraging in shallow water, holding its open bill at roughly a 45° angle and snapping shut on contacted prey. The species is an opportunistic feeder and may take advantage of locally abundant prey; rare kleptoparasitic behavior against smaller storks is recorded. Breeding involves solitary nesters that construct very large, repeat-use stick platform nests high in trees; both parents share incubation and extended parental care, resulting in low year-to-year breeding continuity.
