Kaal Bhairav

In classical mythic cycles Bhairava is presented as a fierce emanation of Shiva entrusted with punitive duties; one well-attested episode links Bhairava to the cosmogonic tale in which he decapitates one of Brahma's five heads, an act that marks him as an executor of divine justice and disciplinary force (see temple and mythic accounts associated with Varanasi and related sources).

Sources consistently describe Bhairava as a wrathful, fearsome form associated with the epithet Daṇḍapāni (rod-holder) and Śvāśva (he whose vehicle is a dog). Iconographically he is commonly shown carrying a danda or rod as instrument of punishment and is ritually associated with a dog vehicle; more detailed attributes (arm counts, colors, specific ornaments) vary across local iconography and are not consistently specified in the supplied material.
