Kahukuranui

Sources present Kahukuranui as a human ancestral figure born at Nukutaurua on the Mahia Peninsula, son of Kahungunu and Rongomaiwahine. He is an eponymous ancestor whose marriages and offspring link multiple hapū; genealogical accounts situate him in the lineages that anchor tribal identity and claims to place. One source gives a tentative chronology, stating he may have lived in the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries, though dates are uncertain.

The supplied sources do not give a physical description of Kahukuranui (height, complexion, dress or distinguishing marks). He is, however, commemorated in material culture: the wharenui at Omāhu is named Kahukuranui, and Kahungunu (Nūhaka) Marae preserves a poupou and a koruru tiki bearing his name/depiction, indicating his representation in carving and marae architecture rather than a documented bodily portrait in the texts.

Kahukuranui is depicted as a chiefly human actor rather than a supernatural agent. Reported actions attributed to him in the sources include leadership in warfare (he led an expedition to Te Pōrangahau and is named in accounts of the Battle of Kai-whakareireia), seeking to avenge Tūpouriao in order to marry the widow Tū-teihonga, capturing Te Pōrangahau after combat, building alliances through marriage (including unions with Ruatapu-wahine and Tū-te-ihonga) and fathering descendants who become eponymous ancestors of hapū. One account (Te Ara) records that he was killed during an attack on Turirangi pā.
