Kai Khosrow

According to the epic tradition preserved in the Shahnameh and related sources, Kai Khosrow is the son of the Iranian prince Siavash and the Turanian princess Farangis. Conceived and born in Turan, he is raised there in exile and trained as a child in the desert by Piran, the wise vizier of Afrasiab. On returning to Iran with his mother he is chosen as heir by his paternal grandfather Kay Kāvus; his accession involves a public test in which Tous fails and Kai Khosrow succeeds. He subsequently organizes armies to avenge his father’s murder by Afrasiab and pursues military campaigns that rout Afrasiab and expel him from his lands.

In illustrated Shahnameh folios he appears as a royal figure — depicted in the manner of epic kings with regal attire in illuminated manuscript tradition — but the narrative sources emphasize his role, lineage, and deeds rather than fixed bodily features. Therefore textual portraits focus on his status as a paradigmatic heroic king rather than a standardized physical type.

Sources frame Kai Khosrow's capacities as dynastic legitimacy, leadership, and exemplary martial and judicial conduct rather than explicit supernatural faculties. He wins a formal test for the throne (defeating Tous’s claim), secures the loyalty and honours of nobles, appoints commanders (e.g., Fariburz) and marshals forces to avenge Siavash. Narratives record repeated military victories over Afrasiab that force the Turanian king into exile. The etymology of his name (Avestan Kauui Haosrauuaŋha) also connects him to the idea of a famed seer/poet, giving him a poetic/prophetic cultural association in addition to political authority.
