The Kitchen God is a Chinese domestic deity associated with the household stove/hearth who monitors family conduct and annually reports that conduct to the Jade Emperor, influencing the household's fortunes. He is typically represented by a paper effigy or plaque kept above the stove and is the focal figure of year-end household rites around the Little New Year.

Origin

Multiple popular origin variants are recorded. One common tale identifies the Kitchen God with a mortal named Zhang Lang whose life ended in or near the hearth and whose story became the basis for his apotheosis as the stove spirit. Other accounts link the deity's cult to technological and communal practices—gratitude offerings when brick stoves became widespread (one variant cites a figure named Yin Zifang and a sacrificed yellow sheep)—and different local narratives explain his transformation from human to household god. These variants are presented in source traditions rather than a single canonical biography.

Appearance

In household practice the Kitchen God is most commonly represented by a paper effigy or a wooden/plaque image placed above or near the fireplace or stove; he is often depicted alongside a wife who is said to record household speech for his annual report. Over time popular imagery also treated him in anthropomorphic human form derived from origin tales (e.g., depictions that recall the Zhang Lang narrative). Sources emphasize domestic iconography (effigies, plaques) more than a fixed, detailed physical description.

Abilities

The Kitchen God's primary function is moral surveillance within the domestic sphere: he observes the family's behavior over the year and, on a scheduled date at year's end, travels to report these observations to Yu Huang Da Di (the Jade Emperor), whose judgment may bring reward or punishment to the household. He is traditionally conceived as resident in or above the stove/hearth and responsive to household ritual: offerings, smearing of honey on his effigy, burning of the effigy, and other year-end rites are performed to influence his report and to mark domestic renewal.
