Kung Lao is a fictional Shaolin monk and human warrior character from the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, introduced in Mortal Kombat II (1993). He is presented as one of the last descendants of the Great Kung Lao, a protector of Earthrealm and ally of Liu Kang, notable for his wide razor-brimmed hat used as a weapon and for participating in inter-realm Mortal Kombat tournaments.

Origin

Debuting in Mortal Kombat II (1993), Kung Lao is presented in franchise sources as a Shaolin monk descended from the Great Kung Lao, a Mortal Kombat champion who was killed by the Shokan Prince Goro 500 years earlier. Across Mortal Kombat continuities he serves as an Earthrealm champion and defender, allied with Liu Kang and the Shaolin order. His narrative history varies by title: in Mortal Kombat Gold he fakes his death to live in peace; in some timelines he is killed by Shao Kahn; in Mortal Kombat: Deception he is noted as having been killed by the Deadly Alliance and resurrected into servitude by the dragon king Onaga, later freed in some accounts. These events reflect the franchise's multiple continuities where characters may be slain, resurrected, or enchanted by sorcery.

Appearance

Kung Lao is depicted as a Shaolin monk whose most consistent visual marker is a wide, razor-edged brimmed hat used as his trademark weapon. In several game appearances (notably Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Shaolin Monks) his attire bears the Chinese character 武, denoting martial/war associations as noted in creator commentary. Visual portrayals emphasize monk-like costume elements and the hat; the hat is central to his design and Fatalities.

Abilities

Sources describe Kung Lao primarily as a highly trained human martial artist and Shaolin warrior. Gameplay and narrative descriptions attribute to him wind-themed moves, projectile attacks, a notable Hat Toss attack, a Dive Kick, and fatalities that employ the hat for slicing and decapitation. Narratively he engages supernatural plot events (being killed, resurrected, or enslaved by sorcerers) but the sources do not ascribe innate non-human powers to him beyond his martial skill and weaponized hat.
