Lingji (灵吉)

Lingji is a literary creation of Wu Cheng'en within the fictional cosmology of Journey to the West. In the novel the Buddha orders Lingji to watch over a wind‑using demon and gives him two magical items (the Flying Dragon Staff and the Wind‑Calming Pill). Modern scholars and the Chinese Academy of History treat Lingji as a fictional character not attested in historical Buddhist scriptures or ritual practice.

Primary textual descriptions in the cited sources emphasize Lingji's role and tools rather than a detailed bodily portrait. In the novel Lingji is presented as a Bodhisattva resident on Little Sumeru Mountain who uses two artifacts: the Flying Dragon Staff (飞龙杖) and the Wind‑Calming Pill (定风丹). A modern popular‑culture depiction (the 2024 video game Black Myth: Wukong) shows a headless figure who plays a ruan, but that portrayal is a contemporary artistic reimagining and not part of the 16th‑century text.
