Little Crown Prince Zhang

In the literary tradition Little Crown Prince Zhang appears in Chapter 66 of Journey to the West as a disciple dispatched by the National Preceptor Wang Bodhisattva to assist Sun Wukong against the Yellow Brows Demon. Literary-historical scholarship and local ritual histories trace antecedents in Yuan zaju theatrical characters named 'Monk Zhang' and in temple cult narratives connected to the Tang monk Sangha and his disciple-types (such as Mucha); scholars suggest that temple histories (including reports of imperial robes donated to Sangha's temple) and regional flood legends were later syncretized with the novelistic figure to produce a local tutelary deity venerated as 'Sizhou Zhang Great Sage.'

In Journey to the West the Prince is described as armed with a paper-white spear (楮白枪) and commands reinforcements (narratively depicted as four divine generals) in battle scenes; supplied folkloric and ritual materials do not provide a standardized iconography or detailed sculptural description for local cult images beyond titles and the mortal name Zhang Changsheng found in ritual scrolls.

Narratively he is a martial and magically trained disciple of the National Preceptor Wang Bodhisattva who engages in combat against water-associated antagonists (in the novel he fights the Yellow Brows Demon and is said to have aided in defeating the Water Mother). In regional religion he functions as a flood-protecting tutelary figure invoked in rites addressing water spirits; sources indicate he participates in a ritual framework (for example, the Water Mother Confession 水母忏) used against the Huai River Water Mother (Shuimu/Wuzhiqi). In the novel his efficacy is limited insofar as he and his allies can be captured by the demon until a higher Buddha (Maitreya in the narrative) intervenes.
