Mama Qucha

Origin

Sources present more than one genealogical tradition. In one common formulation Mama Qucha is wife of Wiraqucha (Viracocha) and mother of Inti (the Sun) and Mama Killa (the Moon), placing her centrally in the divine family of Inca cosmology. In a different ancient legend she is described as the daughter of the Sun and the Moon and as the sister of the culture-hero 'Inca' (son of the Sun), sent from heaven with her brother to teach people to live and work in peace and love. The two accounts therefore present conflicting genealogical roles in different narratives.

Appearance

Anthropomorphic descriptions are rare in the available sources. One cited legend describes her specifically as a pale and beautiful young woman sent from heaven with her brother to instruct humans; however this physical portrayal appears only in that particular account and is not widely elaborated in the documented material.

Abilities

Mama Qucha is invoked and worshipped to calm rough waters and to obtain good fishing and functions as guardian of sailors and fishermen. She is described as representing the feminine principle that balances the known world and is counted among the four Elemental Mothers (with Pachamama, Mama Nina, and Mama Wayra). Sources also link belief in water deities like Mama Qucha to Inca awareness of hydrological processes (for example, that seawater replenishes rain), indicating her cult had both subsistence and explanatory roles regarding water.
