In the corpus of reports and subsequent commentary, the marozi emerges as a label applied by colonial-era observers to sightings and skins of lion-like felids with persistent rosette markings; debates in the literature treat it as either a distinct regional population/morph or as ordinary Panthera leo individuals retaining juvenile markings into adulthood.

Accounts describe a lion-like body with prominent rosette-like spots resembling those of leopards but persisting on what observers reported as adult individuals. At least one reported adult male had an 'insignificant' mane. Size descriptions vary from 'smallish adult lions' to tracks and behavior consistent with fully grown animals. Museum skins and specimens cited in reportage were said to 'fit the description' of spotted adult lions.

No supernatural powers are attributed in the sources. Behaviors recorded are those of a large predatory felid: hunting (tracks interpreted as individuals tracking a herd of buffalo), elusiveness (sighted animals escaping when shot at), and presence at unusually high elevations (approximately 10,000–12,500 feet / 3,000–3,800 metres).
