Origin

In 1995, a supernatural panic swept through hundreds of villages across Karnataka. Rumours spread that a witch — described as a woman who had died in childbirth or by suicide — was visiting homes at night, knocking on doors and calling out in the voice of a deceased family member.

Those who opened the door, or responded to the call, were said to be found dead by morning. The counter-charm spread just as fast as the fear: writing 'Nale Ba' — 'Come Tomorrow' in Kannada — on the front door would satisfy the spirit and send her away until the next night, when she would read the inscription again and again defer.

The epidemic of door-inscriptions was documented by journalists and sociologists across the state. It remains one of the most studied cases of supernatural mass panic in modern South Asia.

Appearance

Nale Ba has no fixed form — she is primarily an auditory presence. Witnesses describe her only as a voice: the exact pitch and cadence of a loved one who has died. Some accounts describe glimpsing a pale woman in a white sari walking away from the door if you look through a window without opening it.

Abilities

Her primary weapon is mimicry. She reproduces the voice of the dead with complete accuracy, exploiting grief and the nocturnal loosening of critical judgment.

She is bound by the inscription on the door — a rare case of a written charm having contractual force over a supernatural entity. She cannot enter a home where she has been deferred in writing.
