Ngāti Ranginui

Ngāti Ranginui are the descendants of the eponymous ancestor Ranginui. In Tauranga traditions Ranginui is described as the son of Tamatea-pokai-whenua from the Takitimu canoe and the brother of Kahungunu and Whaene; these whakapapa connections locate the iwi within wider tribal networks and origin narratives tied to the Takitimu waka and settlement in the region.

The sources do not describe any supernatural appearance. Ngāti Ranginui is a human iwi whose cultural presence is expressed through marae, whānau and hapū structures, and occupation of a defined rohe that extends from Waihi in the north, to the Kaimai Range in the west, to south of Te Puke in the south, and to Tauranga in the east (the rohe does not extend offshore to Matakana Island or Mayor Island / Tūhua). Governance is exercised via representative bodies and marae-based representation.

As a social and political collective, Ngāti Ranginui undertakes kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of its rohe and mahinga kai, maintains marae and customary practices, operates representative organisations (including an Iwi Society, Settlement Trust, and Fisheries Trust) to pursue fisheries, aquaculture, and Treaty settlement mandates, and engages in environmental and cultural revitalisation projects. Historically the iwi participated in armed resistance during the 1860s New Zealand Wars (including actions around Tauranga and Gate Pā) and experienced subsequent land loss that forms part of contemporary redress processes.
