In the most detailed surviving account Perimele is the daughter of Hippodamas who secretly lay with the river/sea god Achelous. When her father discovered the union he pushed her from a cliff into the sea. Achelous kept her afloat on the waves and implored Poseidon to help; Poseidon transformed her into an island bearing her name, listed among the Echinades. The name Perimele is also given to two other mythic women in Greek genealogical lists (a daughter of Amythaon associated as a potential mother of Ixion, and a daughter of Admetus and Alcestis, mother of Magnes by Argus).
Classical summaries provide no detailed physical portrait of Perimele prior to her fate; accounts identify her by kinship (daughter of Hippodamas) and by her relation to Achelous. Her notable post‑narrative 'appearance' is as an island in the Echinades, the geographic form resulting from Poseidon's metamorphosis.
Sources attribute no independent supernatural powers to Perimele prior to her transformation; her mythic significance derives from being the beloved of a river/sea god and from being transformed into a named island by Poseidon. In the narrative Achelous keeps her floating on the sea until Poseidon effects the metamorphosis.
