The City of the Dead (al-Qarāfa, also spelled el’Arafa) is a series of vast Islamic-era necropolises and cemetery districts that stretch around historic Cairo, extending north and south of the Cairo Citadel beneath the Mokattam (Moqattam) Hills. Its origins date back to the early Islamic period following the Arab conquest of Egypt and it developed as Cairo expanded between the 7th century and the modern era. Over centuries the necropolises served as burial grounds for a wide spectrum of society, including elite and sultanic tombs, and contain significant funerary and architectural monuments. Rather than remaining solely funerary spaces, large portions of the necropolis areas have been continuously inhabited and assimilated into Cairo’s urban fabric. Sources describe active residential quarters, workshops for wood, leather, and jewellery, and recent restoration and artisanal-revival projects that target centuries-old monuments. The area has been subject to urban pressures and national redevelopment plans, with some localized demolition reported, but it endures as a lived-in and culturally significant part of the city. The toponym "City of the Dead" is widely used in local and international reportage to describe these necropolis districts; references to a separate Egyptian necropolis, Saqqara, sometimes use the same label but denote a distinct archaeological site outside Cairo.
