Dow Hill in Kurseong carries three interlocking legends that have made it one of West Bengal's most written-about haunted locations. The Victoria Boys' High School, established in 1879 during British administration, falls silent during its annual winter closure from December to March — during which woodcutters and caretakers report whispering voices and footsteps in the empty corridors.
A short stretch of road between Dow Hill and the Forest Department office is known locally as Death Road. Woodcutters have consistently reported seeing the same apparition: a headless boy who walks silently along the road for a few metres and then vanishes into the tree line. No historical murder or accident has been documented as the origin of this figure.
A third sighting — a grey woman seen moving through the forest — completes the set of Dow Hill legends. The school administration has publicly denied the haunted reputation, but the stories have drawn ghost-tourism visitors to Kurseong for decades.
