Glamis Castle stands beside the village of Glamis in Angus, Scotland, and is notable as the longtime seat of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The site has prehistoric associations (including a carved Pictish stone in the vicinity) and is claimed in sources to have origins as a royal hunting lodge from as early as the 11th century. The present castle lineage is recorded as beginning with construction from 1376 for Sir John Lyon, with later medieval and early-modern development reflected in surviving fabric and documentary records. The castle was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and houses family and royal archival material used in published collections of her correspondence. It remains an extant historic house open to the public, offering castle tours and garden visits, and is presented in touristic and heritage contexts.
