Montluc Prison (Prison Montluc)

Montluc Prison (Prison Montluc) in Lyon served as a detention center and as Gestapo headquarters during the German occupation of France in World War II. The site is documented in historical sources as a place where resistance members and others were interned, tortured, deported, and in some cases killed; its wartime history is tied to notable figures and events such as the imprisonment and 1943 escape of Resistance fighter André Devigny (the basis for Robert Bresson's film A Man Escaped) and the broader investigations and accusations surrounding Gestapo crimes (discussed in sources addressing Klaus Barbie and Jean Moulin). After WWII, Montluc continued to be used for detentions and, during the Algerian War (1954–1962), was the site where at least eleven FLN members were executed and subsequently buried anonymously at the Guillotière cemetery according to documentary sources.
