Saint Sophia Cathedral, Polotsk

Saint Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk was constructed by Prince Vseslav of Polotsk between 1044 and 1066 and is described in the sources as probably the oldest church in Belarus. The building stands on the eastern side of Polotsk at the confluence of the Polota River and the Western Dvina River. Historically the cathedral belongs to the mid-11th century milieu of the Kievan Rus' cultural-political sphere and is an important medieval ecclesiastical monument in the region. In modern times the structure is no longer used for regular liturgical functions and serves as a concert hall.
