The Haunting

Rabaul is a flooded caldera formed by a large pyroclastic shield volcano on the island of New Britain. The harbour sheltered the township of Rabaul prior to major eruptive disruption. Geologically, the edifice is low and broad and was assembled from pyroclastic flows; it has produced multiple explosive eruptions in historical times. Major eruptive episodes documented in the supplied sources include the 1937–1943 period, during which explosive eruptions occurred and researchers report more than 500 fatalities in the Rabaul area, and the 1994 simultaneous powerful eruptions of nearby Vulcan and Tavurvur cones that sent ash high into the air and caused extensive urban destruction. Reported phenomena at Rabaul are volcanic and observational: explosive eruptions producing ash plumes rising thousands of metres, ashfall that in 1994 caused collapse of about 80% of buildings in Rabaul, ongoing ash and steam emissions observed in satellite imagery (examples include imagery from 21 June 2005 and 29 May 2008), and a historical pattern of near‑simultaneous (twin) activity at the Vulcan and Tavurvur vents. Researchers interpret the near‑simultaneous eruptions as evidence for a common magma reservoir beneath Rabaul Harbour, an interpretation that has informed monitoring and hazard assessment. The ash produced is described in the sources as hard, abrasive glass and rock particles that pose health hazards to humans and livestock. Culturally and historically, Rabaul was the provincial capital and principal settlement of East New Britain until the 1994 eruptions led to temporary abandonment of the town and relocation of the provincial capital to Kokopo (~20 km away). The site remains volcanically active and has been the subject of ongoing scientific monitoring and reassessment of hazard since at least the 1970s.
