Shaniwar Wada is a historical fortified palace built in 1732 which became the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Confederacy. It remained central to Peshwa administration until 1818. A major event in its history was a large fire in 1828 that largely destroyed much of the fort; the cause of that fire is described in the cited sources as "unexplained." Surviving structures of the complex have since been maintained as a tourist site. Historical accounts such as Parasnis's Poona In Bygone Days emphasize the architectural prominence of Shaniwar Wada during the Peshwa era, and the site continues to appear in contemporary cultural references, including digital models and mentions in popular media.
