Abin Sur

Originally introduced as a history professor from the planet Ungara who became the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814, Abin Sur took up the duties of a lantern-bearer and used both his ring and a spaceship to patrol and investigate cosmic threats. In several continuities he investigated the Blackest Night prophecy, interrogating entities such as the Five Inversions on Ysmault; his fear and waning will during that quest left him vulnerable. Circumstances of his crash on Earth vary by continuity — accounts implicate encounters with Atrocitus/Red-aligned forces, the influence of Parallax/Volthoom in some versions, or deliberate actions in alternate-universe tellings — but the common thread is that he was mortally wounded, arrived on Earth, and used his ring to locate a successor, choosing Hal Jordan, "a man without fear."

In standard continuities Abin Sur is depicted as an extraterrestrial humanoid Green Lantern, often shown mortally wounded when first appearing on Earth. Canonical portrayals vary across alternate universes and storylines: he appears later as a corpse animated as a Black Lantern during Blackest Night; an Earth-3 version whose ring hosted Volthoom is shown as a corpse after deliberately crashing; some Multiversity/alternate-universe depictions give him horns or other divergent physical features. Sources emphasize his identity as an alien Green Lantern rather than providing consistent, detailed physiological description.

As a Green Lantern, Abin Sur wielded a power ring that granted standard ring abilities attributed in the Green Lantern mythos: flight, interstellar travel, and the creation of willpower-based energy constructs. He used a spacecraft for long-range patrols and investigations. Narratively, his willpower and confidence directly affected his ring's functioning; a loss of will contributed to his downfall. After death, parts of his soul were described as tortured in Hell while other parts aided Hal Jordan; he was later resurrected as a Black Lantern (a corpse animated by a black power ring) and participated in Blackest Night events until the black rings were destroyed.
