Agasthenes

In the genealogical and king-list traditions of Elis, Agasthenes appears as the son of Augeas, the legendary Elean king associated with the Heracles cycle. Sources record Agasthenes as Augeas' successor in the kingdom of Elis; some accounts note that government of the region was shared between Amphimachus, Thalpius, and Agasthenes. With Peloris (in accounts that name her) he was father of Polyxenus (Polyxeinos), who is listed among those tied to the Trojan War and who, on returning from Troy, reunified the Elean kingdom. Agasthenes therefore occupies a generational position between Augeas and the Trojan-cycle generation in the mythic-historical framework.

Ancient sources and the surveyed modern summaries provide no physical or iconographic description of Agasthenes. He is treated as a genealogical and political figure within literary king-lists rather than as a character defined by corporeal attributes; this absence of description is consistent with many minor mytho-historical kings whose roles are primarily to mark succession and legitimize rulership.

No supernatural abilities are ascribed to Agasthenes in the available materials. His recorded functions are political and familial: succeeding Augeas as ruler of Elis, participating in shared governance (in some accounts) alongside Amphimachus and Thalpius, and fathering Polyxenus, who features in the Trojan-cycle narratives and in the reunification of the kingdom. Ancient sources do not present him as possessing magical powers or extraordinary behaviors beyond these dynastic roles.
