Barbariccia

Barbariccia originates in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy (Inferno, Canto 22) as one of the Malebranche — a band of infernal devils tasked with guarding Bolgia Five in the Eighth Circle. The figure is a poetic creation of Dante's narrative cosmology; later media and games have reused the name for varied antagonists or guardians, but those are adaptations rather than independent folkloric origins.

Dante's text provides only limited physical description: Barbariccia is depicted performing corporeal actions (for example, seizing a sinner and holding him so another devil can impale him) and his name suggests a curly beard (barba + riccia). The poem does not supply an extended iconographic catalogue of features beyond these action-based cues and the descriptive sobriquet.

Within Inferno 22 Barbariccia demonstrates physical strength (able to seize and hold a sinner), supervisory and command functions (he is made provost over nine other devils by Malacoda in the episode), and organizational discipline relative to his fellow Malebranche (sources describe him as serious and dutiful, ordering other devils and directing a rescue when two devils fall into the boiling pitch). Later game and fiction reuses attribute a variety of powers to characters named Barbariccia, but those are creative adaptations rather than claims about Dante's original depiction.
